Notes & Tabs

Guitar Chords Used

Here's how to play the guitar chords used in this song. With the exception of a few uses of E-minor, you can get away with only needing D, G, and A-major for the entire song. The difficult part is playing / strumming these relatively few chords in a way that does justice to the sparse intimacy of the song.

e-|---2---0---3---0----0---
B-|---3---2---0---0----3---
G-|---2---2---0---0----0---
D-|---0---2---0---2----2---
A-|-------0---2---2--------
E-|-----------3---0--------
      D A G Em Em7

Transition from Verse to Solo

Here is how I play the D-Em7 section that occurs just before the solo/instrumental section. The chord of note here is the Em7-chord, which I play as follows. Note, you can also add a F#-bassnote to the second D-chord in this series, which would create a D-Em-F#m-Em sound (emphasize the walking up-then-down bassnote).

e-|----------------2------0------2------0----|----2-----0-----3-----2----0---
B-|----------------3------3------3------3----|----3-----2-----0-----3----2---
G-|----------------2------0------2------0----|----2-----2-----0-----2----2---
D-|----------------0------2------0------2----|----0-----2-----0-----0----2---
A-|------------------------------------------|----------0-----2----------0---
E-|------------------------------------------|----------------3--------------
                   D Em7 D Em7 D A G D A
     "...take this weight..." (solo/instrumental section)

Walk-down Transition from Solo to Verse

Here's how I play the transition from the solo/instrumental section back to the verse -- mainly, the walkdown. You can do it in a few different ways. One approach is maintaining the A-chord (barre it with your index finger) and use your pinky and ring fingers to walk the bassnote down:

e-|-----------------------------|---2--------0------------
B-|-------2-----2-----2-----2---|---3--------2------------
G-|-------2-----2-----2-----2---|---2--------2------------
D-|-------2-----2-----2-----2---|---0--------2------------ etc
A-|----0------------------------|------------0------------
E-|----------3-----2-----0------|-------------------------
       A /G /F# /E D A
                                       "Good feeling..."

Alternatively, you can change the chords as you walk down and go from A-G-F#m-Em leading back to the D-chord that starts the next verse. Take your pick.

e-|------0-----3-----2-----0---|---2--------0-----------
B-|------2-----0-----2-----0---|---3--------2-----------
G-|------2-----0-----2-----0---|---2--------2-----------
D-|------2-----0-----4-----2---|---0--------2----------- etc
A-|----0-------2-----4-----2---|------------0-----------
E-|----------3-----2-----0-----|------------------------
       A G F#m Em D A
                                       "Good feeling..."

Optional Riff During Solo

Another riff of note is this subtle bassline riff you hear during the E-minor chord of the solo/instrumental section. Here's the tab for that riff. Optional and not fully necessary, but in case it is what your'e looking for -- here you go!

e-|---0-------------------------------------------0---
B-|---0-------------------------------------------2---
G-|---0-------------------------------------------2---
D-|---2----0--2--4----2--4--2----4--2--4----2--0--2--- ...repeat
A-|---2-------------------------------------------0---
E-|---0-----------------------------------------------
      Em A

Cover Versions

Here are a few cover versions of note. They may be helpful in seeing how others approach this on an acoustic guitar (since the album version is piano based and not immediately obvious how to translate to playing on guitar).

About

My name is David Potsiadlo, and I created Songnotes to share my collection of guitar tabs, chords, and lyrics for my favorite songs.

Since I started playing guitar over 10 years ago, I've often been frustrated by the preponderance of mediocre and incomplete song tabs littered across the internet. To combat this, I started keeping my own collection of notes for each song I learn -- always taking the extra time to make sure accuracy and completeness are never compromised. Years later, my collection grew to the point where I knew I had to share it online with fellow aspiring musicians.

In December 2012, I began designing & developing a website that became Songnotes. Here, I share my personal collection of hand-crafted music notation with all those online. I hope you enjoy.
