To play this song in the exact same key as Donovan, you need to use the chords above with a capo applied to the 3rd fret (in standard tuning). Using a capo is not required -- you can still use the chords above and play it just fine, though you'll be in a different key than the recorded version of this song. Tonally, the recorded version of this song is played in the key of Eb.
Here is how you play the guitar chords used in this song. Note that I sometime use "F9" in my notation (to save space) -- this is the same thing as "Fadd9". There are several ways you could add embellishment to the chords and acoustic runs heard throughout the song -- but for a starting point, use these chords.

Here's a approximated tab of how you play the distinctive riff used in the intro (and parts of the verse) in this song. Listen along for reference, and if you're having trouble reading the tabs refer to the videos (on this page) for a great breakdown of how to play this. This tab is designed to emphasize the bass note played before the 2nd and 3rd beat of each measure.

For reference of exactly how this should sound, check out the Soundcloud audio snippet here.
At the end of the bridge, there is a nice distinctive bass-line walkup on the G chord. Quite simply, you'll focus on playing only the highest 4 strings of the guitar -- and modifying the bassnote with your middle and ring finger.

I'm not going to show guitar tablature for the entire song here -- but this should be enough to get you started. I recommend learning the intro as shown above, and then checking out Marty Schwartz's YouTube lesson (below). Most importantly, however, is listening along to the recording and familiarizing yourself enough with the song to be able to put all the pieces together. Have fun!
Here is a video with the audio track from the official recorded version of this song. Listen along if you want to hear exactly how Donovan plays it on the record.
Here is a great video lesson from Marty Schwartz, giving a fabulous intro to approaching this song on acoustic guitar. He does a great job slowly introducing the chords in each section, as well as the various embellishments Donovan uses throughout the song. As with all of Marty's videos, this one is highly recommended if you want to see someone break things down for proper instruction.
If you want to see a nicely produced video of someone else playing this song, I recommend this video from Mike Sinatra. His version is very much in line with the original Donovan version. I find it quite helpful to see someone play this song in an HD recording without any wildly changing camera angles. Enjoy.

Here's a list of the 173 songs I've added to the site since December 2012. Each song was added by me personally.
Songs are grouped by the year they were released.
My name is David Potsiadlo, and I created Songnotes to share my collection of guitar tabs, chords, and lyrics for my favorite songs.
Since I started playing guitar over 10 years ago, I've often been frustrated by the preponderance of mediocre and incomplete song tabs littered across the internet. To combat this, I started keeping my own collection of notes for each song I learn -- always taking the extra time to make sure accuracy and completeness are never compromised. Years later, my collection grew to the point where I knew I had to share it online with fellow aspiring musicians.
In December 2012, I began designing & developing a website that became Songnotes. Here, I share my personal collection of hand-crafted music notation with all those online. I hope you enjoy.
